What Happens After a CHC Assessment?

After a full NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment has taken place, families often want to know what happens next and when a final decision about funding will be made.

The process following the assessment involves a number of stages before the NHS confirms whether the individual is eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding.

Multidisciplinary Team Recommendation

Following the assessment, the multidisciplinary team (MDT) will review the information gathered during the process.

Using the Decision Support Tool, the team will make a recommendation about whether the individual’s needs amount to a primary health need.

Final Decision by the NHS

The final eligibility decision is usually made by the relevant NHS body responsible for NHS Continuing Healthcare in that area.

The National Framework indicates that the process should normally be completed within 28 days of the checklist, although timeframes can vary.

If NHS Continuing Healthcare Is Approved

Where eligibility for NHS Continuing Healthcare is confirmed, the NHS becomes responsible for funding the full cost of care.

This may include:

• care home fees
• nursing care
• care provided at home

If NHS Continuing Healthcare Is Refused

If NHS Continuing Healthcare funding is not awarded, families have the right to request a review of the decision.

In some cases it may be possible to challenge the outcome through the NHS Continuing Healthcare appeals process.

If your relative has recently undergone a Continuing Healthcare assessment and you would like to discuss the outcome, please contact us to discuss your situation.
